 Sinterklaas - December 6

Sinterklaas (St. Nicholas) was a Dutch bishop who immigrated from Spain.  Legend has it that he saved three poor girls, was made a saint for his good deeds and giving heart, and now children in Holland celebrate his birthday on December 6th.  Sinterklaas would visit houses, riding his great white horse and giving children gifts if they had been good.  The children would leave their wooden shoes (klompen) by the fireplace and leave apples and carrots to treat Sinterklaas's horse.  Gifts left were most often goodies such as chocolate letters or ginger cookies (pepernoten).
