Initially when I was browsing a list of pretty hilarious national observance days I came across "Ball Point Pen Day" and thought it might be an interesting topic to explore, plus a straightforward concept that would pair well with/enhance the idea of the simple usability and universality of Google.
I forgot which day it was honestly, so when I went to remind myself which day I was actually doing, I ended up reading the history of the invention of the ball-point pen which is actually way more interesting that I thought. It's worth a little speed-read to get an idea of the lasting impact of a (now) simple invention that we pull out of our bag and use pretty much every day.
An excerpt from the website below: The first great success for the ballpoint pen came on an October morning in 1945 when a crowd of over 5,000 people jammed the entrance of New York’s Gimbels Department Store. The day before, Gimbels had taken out a full-page ad in the New York Times promoting the first sale of ballpoints in the United States. The ad described the new pen as a "fantastic... miraculous fountain pen ... guaranteed to write for two years without refilling!" On that first day of sales, Gimbels sold out its entire stock of 10,000 pens-at $12.50 each!
Another site (fastcompany.com) mentions: "In 1945, the pens went on sale in the U.S., at Gimbel's in New York, for $12.50 each ($145, inflation adjusted). The store sold $125,000 worth on day one, and Bic, which bought the patent, has sold 100 billion-plus since 1950."
Wow.
For my googledoodle I'm planning on creating a stop-animation and my official plan is this: I am going to have a blank sheet that will have only the Google Shading visible at the get-go, then as the animation progresses the black outline of "Google" will be written one by one, and then when that's done each letter will begin to get filled in scribble-style (still neatly, hopefully) from the top down in the corresponding google colours all at once. Maybe music will play (?) I'm planning on it being about 10 seconds. I feel that by showcasing the google logo first slowly, uncoloured, this will just present the name of the brand Google (of course), and then the colours will illustrate the theme of the day by using the medium of ball-point pen ink in the correct colours and scribbly style to give the google logo it's life.
That's my plan, and any feedback/comments/improvements are very welcome :)
Lauren
